Selina Walter is a BYU–Hawaii alumna originally from Chuuk, Micronesia, now back home building her career and serving her community. She graduated in April 2026 with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. Today, she's putting her legal and political knowledge to work as a Legislative Editor with the Legal Counsel at the Chuuk State Legislature, helping shape policy and strengthen governance in her home state.
What's Your Favorite Memory From Your Time at BYU–Hawaii?
One of my favorite memories was connecting with people from all around the world and making friendships that I know will last a lifetime. Being surrounded by people from so many different cultures taught me to appreciate how much we can learn from one another.
How Did BYU–Hawaii Shape Who You Are Today?
BYU–Hawaii helped me become more confident in myself, use my voice, and stand up for what I believe in. Most importantly, it strengthened my desire to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and to use what I have learned to serve my community.
What Are You Doing Now Professionally?
I currently work with the Legal Counsel as a Legislative Editor at the Chuuk State Legislature. My work allows me to use my education in political science, communications, criminal justice, and legal studies while contributing to the legislative process in my home state.
How Did Your BYU–Hawaii Education Help Prepare You for Your Career?
My education at BYU–Hawaii gave me both the academic foundation and practical skills I need in my career. I learned how to communicate effectively, research, write, think critically, and work with people from different backgrounds. The networking and relationships I built at BYU–Hawaii have also been incredibly valuable.
I am especially grateful for my professors, who went above and beyond their callings to support, guide, and prepare me for my career. Their encouragement, wisdom, and willingness to invest in me made a lasting difference in my life. I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from such dedicated mentors, and I will forever carry the lessons they taught me.
What's a Highlight or Achievement You're Especially Proud Of?
Graduating from BYU–Hawaii is one of my greatest accomplishments. I am also proud of the friendships and connections I made with people from all over the world. I came to BYU–Hawaii as one person and left with a broader perspective, a stronger sense of purpose, and a whole community of people I can call friends.
What Advice Would You Give to Current BYU–Hawaii Students?
Study hard, but don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the experience. Build meaningful friendships, try new things, and go to the temple regularly, whether it’s once a week with friends or by yourself. Most importantly, learn to do things for yourself and take responsibility for your own growth. Don’t always expect someone else to do things for you. That’s part of becoming independent and preparing for the reality of life after college.
What Does Being a Seasider Mean to You?
Being a Seasider means being part of something truly special. I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to learn and grow at BYU–Hawaii. The beautiful Laie community and the people I met there will always have a special place in my heart. No matter where life takes me, I will always be grateful to be a Seasider.
