Elder Peter M. Johnson: A Long Shot and a Higher Hand
Elder Peter M. Johnson, a BYU–Hawaii alumnus and former basketball student-athlete from Queens, New York, rose from a difficult upbringing to a life defined by faith, purpose, and service. At BYU–Hawaii, he first came to know Jesus Christ and, after converting from Islam, developed a deep love for the Savior. As the first African American General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he continues to lead and uplift others.
Brushstrokes and Breakthroughs
Jack Soren, a 2019 Graphic Design graduate of Brigham Young University–Hawaii, has transformed his passion for art into a career as a globally recognized artist. Raised on the shores of Laie in a family of creatives and entrepreneurs, his work spans Hawaii and the world, capturing the attention of major brands and communities alike. Beyond the brushstrokes, Soren is driven by something bigger: his faith and family.
New Delhi, New Dream
Arun Singh, from New Delhi, India, graduated from BYU–Hawaii in Winter 2026 with a degree in Information Technology. During his time, he spent two years as a web designer for Alumni Relations, co-founded the Aikido Club, and reached the semi-finals of the Empower Your Dreams competition. Accepted into Ensign College for advanced IT certifications, Arun hopes to return to India and build a business of his own.
From Guam to Graduate
Patrikaela "Kaela" Kalima Martinez, from Guam, graduates from BYU–Hawaii Spring 2026 with a degree in Elementary Education. During her time, she co-founded the Micronesia Club and poured her heart into her role as Customer Relations Specialist in Alumni Relations. Chuukese by heritage, Kaela looks forward to returning home, getting sealed in the Yigo, Guam temple to her fiancé she met at BYUH, and spending her life teaching and serving those around her while sharing the BYU–Hawaii mission.
