People First
Colby Silva is a business management student with an emphasis in supply chain, operations and analytics. Despite the logical and technical nature of his major, Colby understands that it is the human supply chain, the connections people make with each other, that form the foundation of businesses and communities. As the Student Alumni Relations Representative, Colby strives to facilitate the communication between alumni and students to create opportunities for jobs and internships, form community service experiences, and further expand the BYU–Hawaii alumni network for the benefit of current and future alumni.
Cultural Variety
Coming from a multi-ethnic family, Colby has seen firsthand the benefits and struggles of blending cultures. He has Filipino, Japanese, Portuguese, and Hawaiian blood and was born in Hawaii. He has spent time living in Hawaii, Utah, Connecticut, and South Korea. With all this exposure to different people, Colby finds joy in helping others find common ground rather than highlighting the differences. To him, serving others is one of the best ways to soften hearts when there are misunderstandings and help people see that they are not so different after all.
Love of Service
As a service missionary, Colby spent time serving in local food pantries, community farms, and local aquariums. He also volunteered to be a social media specialist for BYU Pathway in Europe, served as the technology specialist for the Massachusetts Boston Mission, and taught English to church employees from non English-speaking countries. These experiences have helped form Colby’s service-minded leadership style and is confident they will help him form genuine connections with students and alumni.
Being a Connector
With the technical skills from his business major and his years of volunteer and customer service experience, Colby seeks to be a connector that balances efficiency, professionalism, warmth, and hospitality in every interaction. He is excited to serve and put his skills to use in serving students and alumni. He looks forward to welcoming everyone and is excited to learn from every person he meets.
