Alumni Spotlight, February 2011 – Nikki Bullock Olave

Nikki
Olave (Inter Cultural Studies `03), new Washington, D.C. Chapter Chair,
is a Congressional staffer for a senior member of Congress in the
United States House of Representatives. As the new mother of a baby
girl, she is successfully balancing work and family life. Originally
from Mesa, AZ, Nikki, husband David, and daughter Ellie, now reside in
Washington, D.C.
Nikki is grateful for the many multicultural
experiences while studying at BYU–Hawaii. They prepared her for th daily
interactions with diverse interns, experienced law makers, and
international leaders.
The Member of Congress to whom Nikki
reports, picked up an influential seat on a House committee to which she
says, "this will open up opportunities to work on new legislation and
regulations in an attempt to curb U.S. government spending."
Nikki
recalled that some of the courses she took at BYU–Hawaii provided
powerful learning tools to teach both the spiritual and secular aspects
of life. These tools proved extremely beneficial upon moving to DC
because Nikki taught in the Virginia Institute program and was able to
use those skills to improve the spiritual learning of her students.
To
current students, Nikki expressed that, “while future goals await
completion, remember to enjoy the moments that are happening now...Stay
connected with classmates.” She also encourages, “It is important to
always serve in the Spirit of Aloha. I believe students of BYU–Hawaii
offer unique perspectives, being from all over the world, they can be a
great force for good.”
Whether raising their new baby, teaching
Relief Society, or helping write new legislation, Nikki is looking
forward to an exciting and impacting 2011.
