Early Life and Education

Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, Bobby Akoi's journey of lifelong learning and service began with a strong foundation in education. He graduated from BYU–Hawaii, where he earned degrees in travel industry management and elementary education, with minors in Japanese language, psychology, and music. Later, he pursued further academic excellence, obtaining a master's degree in science administration from Central Michigan University.

Diverse Career Path and Achievements

Bobby Akoi's career is characterized by versatility and excellence across various fields. During his time as a student at BYU–Hawaii, he distinguished himself as a member of the singing group, Showcase Hawaii, and served as student body vice president of organizations. He also showcased his talents at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) as a performer in the night show, and as a Japanese Guide.

Musical and Athletic Accomplishments

Music and sports played significant roles in Bobby Akoi's life. He directed two Hawaiian choirs, served as a former music teacher for Hawaii's Department of Education, and was a member of the renowned Singing Bishops. Additionally, his athletic prowess was evident as he excelled in volleyball at BYU–Hawaii, earning NAIA Volleyball All-American recognition two consecutive years.

Spiritual Journey and Leadership Roles

Grounded in his faith and commitment to service, Bobby Akoi served as a missionary in the Sapporo Japan Mission, where he touched lives and shared his beliefs with others. Throughout his life, he held various leadership positions within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including twice as a bishop on campus at BYU–Hawaii and in the Laie Hawaii North stake presidency for a decade.

Continuing Commitment to Service

Even in retirement, Bobby Akoi's dedication to service remains unwavering. He served as the Director of Protocol and Community Relations at the Polynesian Cultural Center for an impressive 44 years before retiring in 2019. Furthermore, he continues to contribute actively to his community by serving on the boards of Kahuku Medical Center, One Children's Voice Choir, and BYUH's Alumni Board.

Family and Legacy

Blessed with a loving family, Bobby Akoi and his wife, Hiromi, have four children and thirteen grandchildren. Together, they embody the values of love, service, and dedication, leaving a lasting legacy of inspiration and impact on all who have the privilege of knowing them. In every aspect of his life, Bobby Akoi exemplifies the virtues of dedication, leadership, and service, leaving an indelible mark on his community and beyond.
